Calories aren’t the only things that count!

We all know that it is better to avoid certain foods, as much as possible. Think of foods with trans fats, processed sugars, ... all of the ingredients that ensure the calorie count to go up.

Some may count calories to lose weight, others so simply recover or stay on track. In principle, it seems simple: eat less than you burn, and you will lose weight. This is partly true but is really an oversimplification of the whole story. Not sure what we’re talking about? Let us explain it to you in more detail…

Calories… What?!

Have you ever considered what exactly a calorie is? Well, a calorie is defined as the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. It is, therefore, a measure of energy.

The body extracts this energy from nutrients and sends it to the organs so that they are able to function. In other words, it is the fuel of our body.

All calories are not the same!

Everything you eat and drink contains calories (except water), which can looked at in terms of quality: good, bad and very bad calories.

  • Good: vegetables, fruit, oatmeal, nuts, seeds, whole grain products, ...
  • Bad: soda, candy, ...
  • Very bad: products with trans fats, pre-packaged meals, ...

A healthy lifestyle is, therefore, not just about how many calories you eat, but also about what kind of calories you eat, as well.

Did you know that 50g of dried fruit contains about 180 calories? This may seem like a lot, but dried fruits are also packed with vitamins, fibres and antioxidants! So, ignoring these solely based on their calorie count wouldn’t be the best idea!
